SECOND OPINION PROCESS

ON THIS PAGE:

Preparing for Your Child's Second Opinion

Getting a second opinion starts with an email to our coordinator.聽You don鈥檛 need a doctor鈥檚 referral.聽

We鈥檒l collect information about your child, like their medical history, your concerns, and care journey. Generally, we may ask for:

  • Current or expected diagnosis
  • Diagnosing doctor鈥檚 name, address, and contact information
  • Your address and contact information
  • Health insurance information
  • Results from tests, imaging, or lab work
  • Written treatment plans, if available
  • Other records as needed

Scheduling Your Child鈥檚 Visit

After reviewing your child鈥檚 case as a team, we may schedule a second opinion call, a video visit, or an in-person visit to go over our recommendations. You may meet with one of our specialists to go over everything in detail.

During this process, we answer all your questions and empower you to make the best decisions for your child.

We provide a written summary of our recommendations that you can share with your child鈥檚 doctor. We鈥檙e available to consult with them as well.

Sometimes, we may recommend additional tests or exams. We鈥檒l help guide you through the next steps.

Convenient Video Visits

In many cases, we can offer second opinion appointments through scheduled, live video visits. You can avoid waiting rooms and save travel time.

When to Get a Second Opinion

You may wonder when to get a second opinion.聽

The simple answer is anytime you have questions or need to make a care decision. Sometimes, for certain procedures, it鈥檚 required by your health insurance company.聽

It鈥檚 good to know that most doctors encourage second opinions. They often will consult with us, too.聽

Reasons families come to us for second opinions include:

  • New or changed diagnosis
  • Diagnosis of a rare or complex condition

  • Multiple surgical options or methods to choose from
  • Questions about tests, treatment results, or risks
  • Continued symptoms even after treatment
  • Questions about the latest clinical trial treatments

Ultimately, second opinions can give you confidence and peace of mind knowing you鈥檙e making the most informed decisions for your child.
