Williams Syndrome Program
Expert, Coordinated Care for Kids
Children with Williams syndrome can have issues with elasticity and flexibility in the heart muscles and blood vessels. They’re more likely to have congenital heart disease (a condition they’re born with) and narrowed blood vessels throughout the body.
91´óÉñ Children’s is among a handful of programs in the country to offer integrated, highly specialized care for kids and young adults with Williams syndrome. We’re one of nine programs in the Williams Syndrome Association’s nationwide clinical consortium. This means our team furthers research and develops the standard of care for kids everywhere.Â
As part of recognized, award-winning heart centers in Delaware and Florida, our cardiology team works with many specialists and surgeons, nutritional counselors, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation therapists and others who know how to help kids with Williams syndrome thrive. Your child gets the highest level of pediatric expertise all in one place.
Together as a team, we watch your child as they grow and develop. We address problems early when treatment may be more effective. We educate your family and listen to you. And we’re here until your child reaches young adulthood.Â
Our Services
Kids with Williams syndrome can have different problems, like heart valve disorders, irregular heartbeat or narrowing in the blood vessels. Trouble with kidney function, vision, muscles, feeding and swallowing, hearing, learning and development can also happen. We care for it all.Â
Children do better with a whole team of specialists working together. We customize therapies to your child’s needs, with:
- Heart and vascular condition management with experts in pediatric cardiology, cardiac imaging, interventional cardiology, cardiac anesthesiology, cardiothoracic surgey, nursing, advanced practice medicine and othersÂ
- Cardiovascular genetics testing and counseling for the whole family
- Fetal heart care like fetal echocardiograms and care planning for baby after birth if needed
- Cardiac rehabilitation with focused therapies just for kids with heart conditions
- Speech and feeding and swallowing therapies from experienced speech and language pathologists
- Nutritional support to help ensure your child gains weight and has the nutrients they need to grow strong
- Respiratory therapy including breathing exercises, oxygen therapy and machines to help with breathing problems
- Cardiac psychology care to support emotional wellness and behavioral and learning development
We provide the right care, at the right time, sometimes at the same time.
During visits, your child may also see a pediatric ophthalmologist, audiologist, otolaryngologist, gastroenterologist, endocrinologist and nephrologist. As needed, we bring in others like pediatric neurologists, interventional radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons and urologists.
