Hospital Medicine Fellowship

Program Overview

The Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship at 91大神 Children鈥檚 Hospital, Delaware (Wilmington, Del.) in affiliation with Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University will provide training to prepare graduates to excel in pediatric hospital medicine in clinical, academic, administrative and research domains.听The fellowship is accredited through听the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The two-year program will provide clinical training for one fellow per year in multiple settings, in addition to academic mentorship, administrative guidance and research instruction. Participants may obtain a Master of Science degree听(MS in Healthcare Quality and Safety, MS in Population Health, MS in Health Policy, MS in Applied Health Economics and Outcomes Research or MS in Population Health Intelligence) from Thomas Jefferson University College of Population Health, or an online Master of Education degree through Cincinnati Children鈥檚/University of Cincinnati. Other degrees will be considered at the discretion of program and departmental leadership.

The fellowship is within our hospital鈥檚 Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics and Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. The division is composed of pediatricians and advanced practice providers in pediatric hospital medicine and internal medicine pediatrics. The program offers an array of educational opportunities for both faculty and fellows. We currently have 16听 pediatric hospitalists and three medicine pediatric hospitalist that function in various roles at the main hospital site. We also collaborate closely with colleagues in general academic pediatrics, weight management, adolescent medicine, transitions of care, cerebral palsy orthopedics, and physical medicine/rehabilitation.听Core clinical rotations occur through our main teaching site at 91大神 Children鈥檚 Hospital, Delaware and through our community site at Inspira Medical Center Vineland in Vineland, New Jersey.

Experiences can be tailored to fit a fellow鈥檚 individual interests. This includes collaboration with Jefferson for opportunities in medical education, use of resources through the statewide Delaware-CTR ACCEL program (), participation in hospitalwide quality and safety programs, and advocacy opportunities at both the state and federal levels, including through the 91大神 National Office of Policy and Prevention. Fellows will interact with other subspecialty fellows through didactic lectures and research training courses.

Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows will be eligible to sit for the American Board of Pediatrics Pediatric Hospital Medicine board. They will also be competitive for academic faculty positions in children鈥檚 hospitals, as well as prepared to thrive in community hospital settings.

The 2-year program is designed to meet ACGME training requirements in pediatric hospital medicine, while allowing fellows to adapt specific training based on career goals.

Clinical inpatient pediatrics training includes:

  • Clinical and teaching rounds on general inpatient teams at a freestanding children鈥檚 hospital
  • Clinical and teaching rounds at a community hospital
  • Well newborn nursery at a community hospital听
  • Pediatric critical care and ED
  • Anesthesia and procedural sedation
  • Surgical co-management of children with medical complexity
  • Resident and medical student teaching听
  • Administrative experience
  • Development of a CV and Educational and/or Advocacy portfolios

Additional clinical elective experiences are available depending on interest, including:

  • Transport medicine
  • Child abuse pediatrics
  • Palliative care
  • Acute and chronic pain management
  • Pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Advanced Care at Home (post-discharge home telehealth service)

Most of your training takes place at our children鈥檚 hospital in Wilmington, a nationally recognized destination for complex pediatric care. It鈥檚 the state鈥檚 only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and home to a Level IV NICU, so you鈥檒l see the full range of high-acuity cases.
